I was reading a blog called Modern Hiker and the most recent post had a paragraph that really struck a chord with me.
“On Saturday morning, the skies were patchy, but there was some blue visible - so I headed out east to try to get some post-rain views from Mt. San Antonio. Also, to punish myself with a nasty hike for not getting out on the trail in a while.”
I haven’t been out on the trail for awhile either. I think I need to exact some strict punishment as well. Soon.
It reminded me that I like a good fitness “punishment” of tired-followed-by-sore muscles.
I remembered celebrating the end of a school semester or the onset of spring with a gruelling bike ride. I was never prepared for the chunk of mileage I was about to bite off. It didn’t matter that I hadn’t ridden much all winter. I was going to start the season off with a epic ride, usually a big hill climb. I didn’t waste time with base training miles.
Don’t get me wrong, preparation for any physical activity, especially in the outdoors, is extremly important. I’ve learned that pushing yourself beyond your abilities can be dangerous. I’ve had some brutal snow skiing injuries that should have never happened had I known my physical limits. I’m just saying that sometimes our minds underestimate what we can do.
Don’t let negative thoughts get in the way of getting out the door. Stop making excuses of not being in good enough shape yet or being too busy and get up and do something. It will likely jump start better fitness and a season of fun.
