I was browsing around buffalorun.org looking for a Davis County trail running race, when I saw an anouncement for what might be the newest trail running race in Northern Utah.  I bet it will be an instant success. I hiked Frary Peak late last year and really enjoyed it. We even ran a lot of the trail coming back.  The trip took us 3 hours. I’m sure the race won’t take that long.

Here is my gps route of the trail on EveryTrail.com

Here are some details from the race organizer.

  Date
This race will be on Sunday, September 30th at 12 p.m. on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. Hey, we know the race is on Sunday and a lot of people go to church on Sunday, but this day may be a lot better for those who work on Saturday or have other chores to do. 12 p.m. also may give you enough time to get home from church and get out to the island, enjoy a short little “fun” run and eat hamburgers and hotdogs with your friends. Not only that, but it’s a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Beats watching football.

Limited entry
Because of the trail, we will be limiting this race to the first 50 entrants only. The race this year is on a trial basis. There is some concern on the part of wildlife officials that 50 runners on that trail may have an adverse impact on the wildlife that live on the mountainside. There will be wildlife official at the race to monitor this effect. Also, there is no race day entry. Period.

Course
This race will take place on the Frary Peak Hiking Trail. This is a trail that starts at about 4500′ and climbs another 1900′ in about three miles. The trail actually goes to the top of Frary Peak, the highest point on Antelope Island. However, the race will turn around at the radio repeater about 1/4 mile from the summit. You would have to have a death wish to want to race down from the actual peak. So to recap, go uphill for three miles, turn around and go downhill for three miles. We’ll add a little bit at the bottom to make it a full 10K. The trail will be open to hikers so make sure you dodge them. This race is guaranteed to not be a 10K PR for anyone unless it’s your only 10K. More details at BuffaloRun.org.
